Bagley and Broadhead win pairs title

Bagley and Broadhead win pairs title.

From a strong field of 29 pairs, Jonathan Bagley and Stephen Broadhead emerged victorious after a long day’s play at the Northern Snooker Centre.
In an all Leeds final they defeated Richard Binns and Glenn Cassidy 3-1, after beating last year’s winners Wayne Cooper and Kevin Firth in the semi-final. Binns and Cassidy had scraped through a tough semi against Lionel Payne and Johnny Gallagher which had gone down to the pink in the decider.

Shaun Wilkes and Dave Pagett won the Plate competition, beating Chris Hart and Gareth Green in the final. Daniel Boyes took the days high break prize with a run of 90.

Thanks to Andy Kitson for officiating and of course to our sponsors, the Northern Snooker Centre

NSC “B” brings the 3-man team title to Leeds

It’s coming home!

This year’s Yorkshire Team Knockout competition was won by a team representing our hosts and sponsors, the Northern Snooker Centre. Led by Stephen Broadhead and supported by Lewis Harper and Peter Lines, NSC “B” defeated Huddersfield 4-2 in a close-fought final. The Huddersfield team was made up entirely of Read family members. Captain Oliver was assisted by brother Jake and dad Robert.

It was clear from the outset that the competition would be too close to call, 6 of the first 8 group matches ended 3-3, and only one team emerged from the group stage with 3 wins.

Group A was won by last year’s winners, Harrogate “1,” who pipped Morley WMC by virtue of a better frame win percentage.

Group B was even closer, NSC “B” and Belle Isle finishing exactly level, NSC “B” going through on the high break rule.

Group C was another one decided by frame win%, Huddersfield just pushing Hull into 2nd place.

Group D was the only group which produced clear-cut winners, Hanging Heaton winning all their matches.

The first semi-final featured NSC”B” against Harrogate “1”.

Callum Waite took both frames for Harrogate, with Lewis Harper responding for NSC. Peter Lines won a close first frame against Kaif Shazad but when Shazad took a 40-point lead in the second frame a decider looked likely.
Lines fought back and there was only a couple pf points in it on the colours. Shazad took green, brown and blue but left himself awkward on the pink and the chance was lost. Lines took pink and after a bout of excellent safety from both players, it was the NSC player who finally emerged victorious.

The other semi was even closer. Michael Whaley took both frames for Hanging Heaton, with Oliver Read replying for Huddersfield. Robert Read won his first frame against Wayne Cooper and when he went 40 points in front on the green in the second the match looked all over. If this had been an individual competition, Cooper may well have conceded at this point but team games are different and amazingly 3 snookers and a free ball later he was in a position to pot blue, pink and black to level the match.

Robert Read returned to play the decider against Michael Whaley, and to his credit he shrugged off his disappointment of the previous frame and played a rock-solid game, a couple of 30-odd breaks eventually putting his team in the final.

In the final, Robert Read continued his impressive form, beating Lewis Harper whilst on the match table, Peter Lines was hitting back for NSC. So the final hinged on the match-up between captains Stephen Broadhead and Oliver Read. Broadhead took the first frame, and a 38 break put him in command of the second. Oliver came back and it went down to the last four colours, Broadhead potting a pressure brown, followed by blue and pink to take frame, match and title for his side.

Stephen Broadhead takes it home to Leeds for NSC “B” side

Michael Whaley took the high break prize with a run of 83.

Thanks to all who attended, it was especially nice to see a couple of teams representing the east of the county, and of course thanks as always to our hosts and sponsors the NSC.

Yorkshire Snooker Championship Q2 Round-Up

Yorkshire Championship Q2 Round-Up

After 9 hours of snooker the final 4 qualifiers for this years Yorkshire Snooker Championship were decided yesterday at the NSC.
First player through was last year’s winner Peter Lines, comfortable victories against Craig Nicholson, Gavin Godfree and Michael Whaley seeing him into this years quarter-finals.
Next player through was South Yorkshire’s Shaun Wilkes who despatched Lionel Payne, Scott Sigsworth and Dave Pagett along the way.
Bradford’s Josh Walker took the third quarter-final spot, coming from behind to beat Mike Lucas in the final qualifying match. Walker had earlier beaten Chris Hart, Chris Cooke and James Dabell.
The last qualifying spot went to Huddersfield’s Robert Read. Read battled past Steve Peace, Tony Massey and Jake Crofts before facing Gary Milne in the last match of the day. Milne had earlier had breaks of 104,62,53,59 and 95 in his 3 victories and when he took a 2-1 lead against Read he looked on course to be going through. Read had other ideas though, and he levelled at 2-2 before a superb 58 break in the decider gave him the match.

Josh Walker (Bradford).
Shaun Wilkes (Sheffield).
Robert Read (Huddersfield).

The last 8 will be whittled down to the 2 finalists on Sunday, April 6th.

Harrogate league players are to the fore in the first Yorkshire Championship qualifier

Harrogate league players are to the fore in the first Yorkshire Championship qualifier.

The Harrogate Snooker league had representatives in all 4 final qualifying matches in the first qualifying day in this years Yorkshire Snooker Championship.

First player through was Gyles Behbood who defeated Huddersfield’s Conrad Norcliffe 3-1 in the qualifying match having earlier beaten Daniel McKenna 3(74,55)-0 and ex pro Kuldesh Johal 3-2.

In the third qualifying tie, Harrogate’s Kaif Shazad had a titanic struggle with Leeds player Adam Rennison. The match went to the deciding frame, and with the lead changing hands several times it was a relieved Rennison who finally potted the pink to edge himself over the line. Rennison having had earlier 3-0 wins over Vic Craven and Adam Prince.

In the last match to finish it was last years runner up Dan Womersley who overcame Harrogate’s Tom Harris 3-2. Womersley had breaks of 97,89,86,81,67,56,54 and 51 in his 4 victories throughout the day.
