Harrogate are Team Ko Champions 2024

There were 12 teams entered in yesterday’s inaugural one-day team knockout competition played at the Northern Snooker Centre.

The teams were split into 3 groups with the group winners and the best performing second placed team progressing to the semi-finals.

In group “A” it was the team representing the hosts, the NSC, who came out on top. An impressive 5-1 victory against Sheffield “2” was followed by a 4-2 win over Wakefield, but they still needed to win their final frame against Belle Isle to salvage a 3-3 draw and cement the top spot.

Sheffield’s James Dabell recorded the day’s highest break (81) in his team’s 5-1 victory over Wakefield.

Results-

Sheffield “2” 1-5 NSC
Belle Isle WMC 6-0 Wakefield

So the semi-final lineup was

LBSO v Hanging Heaton
Harrogate v NSC

The first semi-final went to LBSO who defeated Hanging Heaton 4-2, Mally Bilclough proving the difference between the teams winning both his frames.

The second semi-final was won by Harrogate with a 5-1 victory over the NSC, Kaif Shazad and Shabir Ditta gaining maximum points for Harrogate.

So it was all set up for what looked like a close final between LBSO and Harrogate but what emerged was a one-sided contest as Harrogate raced into a 3-0 lead and when Shabir Ditta won his second frame against James Pears it was all over.

Congratulations to Harrogate and thanks as always to our hosts and sponsors the Northern Snooker Centre.

Inter District Round Up

It’s a clean sweep for Sheffield “2” in Division 1.

Congratulations to Sheffield “2” who sealed the Division 1 title after a flurry of matches on the final weekend.

Not only are they champions but David Dalton ended as “MVP” with an impressive 19 wins from 22 frames, and Will Lemons (101) took the high break prize.
At the other end of the table, Rotherham are relegated and Sheffield “1” will need to wait to see how many teams enter next season before learning which division they will be in.

Cooper and Firth take Pairs title

Cooper and Firth take Pairs title.

The experienced Bradford duo of Wayne Cooper and Kevin Firth battled their way to the Yorkshire Snooker Pairs title yesterday after a full day of action at the Northern Snooker Centre.

The revised format of shorter matches in the early rounds with a plate competition for 1st match losers seemed to work well with the semi-final stage reached by mid-afternoon.

In the top half of the draw, Cooper/Firth had wins against Large/Dabell, Bagley/French and Jensen/Jackson before coming up against Michael Whaley/Josh Walker in the semi-final. The Bradford pair raced into a 2-0 lead before Whaley/Walker hit back to level. A tense final frame went down to the colours before Cooper stepped up to calmly clear green to pink to seal the victory.

In the lesser populated bottom half of the draw, Mark Ball and Ant Green saw off Leeds duo Malcolm Bilclough and Tony Massey before beating Harrogate’s Kaif Shazad and Liam Mills in the semi-final.

In a final played in great spirit, a 33 break by Cooper was enough to take the first frame before Ball/Green levelled. The next two frames were tight affairs but it was Cooper/Firth who took them both for a 3-1 win and with it the Pairs Trophy.

The day’s high break was a run of 62 by Michael Whaley.

In the consolation plate final Sheffield’s Shaun Wilkes and Dave Pagett defeated Harrogate pairing Ian Brotherton and Shab Ditta.

Thanks to Andy Kitson for officiating and to our sponsors the Northern Snooker Centre.

Sheffield “2” hit Top Spot in Division 1

Sheffield “2” hit the Top Spot in Division 1

Despite being held to a 3-3 draw at home to Castleford, Sheffield “2” moved to the top of Division 1 with a 1-point lead over Brighouse and a game in hand. David Dalton put the home side into a 3-1 lead before Andrew Houlker levelled for the visitors.

Leeds “1” played a re-arranged game against Rotherham winning 5-1 thanks to maximum points from Richard Binns (71) and Stephen Broadhead.

The only other game played was a match brought forward between Sheffield “1” and Castleford, which resulted in Castleford taking all 6 frames thanks to wins for Mikie Hodgson, Andrew Houlker and Pete Raby. (The result for this match will be added to the website when the next round of matches is played).

In the race for the MVP, Lee Roberts and David Dalton are tied on 15 wins each, Roberts heads the table by virtue of having participated in more matches.

The high break is with Will Lemons (101).

The following matches are outstanding and must be played before the weekend of 1st/2nd June.

Sheffield “1” v Leeds “1”
Sheffield “2” v Leeds “1”
Leeds “1” v Sheffield “1”
Brighouse v Leeds “1”
Rotherham v Ossett

In Division 2, Leeds “2” kept their lead at the top of the table with a 3-3 draw at home to Harrogate. Tom Harris(68) put Harrogate in front before James Pearson salvaged a draw for Leeds. Kaif Shazad chipping in with a 56 break for Harrogate.

Second-placed Wharfedale were also held to a 3-3 draw at Sheffield “3”, Gyles Behbood (79) putting them in command before Reece Matin hit back for Sheffield.

In the third match, Bradford had a 4-2 victory at Huddersfield, Atif Mukhtar putting the home side in front before Peter Hamilton and Boover Singh secured the victory for Bradford.

Kaif Shazad holds the top spot in the Division 2 MVP race with 11 wins, with 4 players sharing second place with 10. Tom Harris holds the high break with 103.

With all fixtures up to date, it looks like the last match of the season between Wharfedale and Leeds “2” could well decide the title.

Middlesbrough’s Darren Kell triumphs as Billiards returns to YBSA calendar

Middlesbrough’s Darren Kell triumphs as Billiards returns to YBSA calendar.

A field of 24 players took part in the Yorkshire Billiards Championship which made a return yesterday after a gap of a few years. The field was bolstered by a strong contingent from the Middlesbrough area, a hotbed for Billiards, which until 1996 was classed as “Cleveland” but is now officially part of the “ceremonial” county of North Yorkshire.

Kell sailed through the initial group stage, his 3 victories ending in an impressive plus 938 points tally, including breaks of 51, 104u, 51,99, and the days highest of 122. He was joined in the quarter-finals by group winners Kyle Cunningham (78), Brian Barnett, Mark Hirst (51), Jonathan Marwood (60,76, 57,68) Craig Fitzpatrick (53,63) and best runners-up, Chris Jarvis and Paul Roberts.

The quarter-final results were as follows-

Kyle Cunningham 266 v 199 Brian Barnett
Mark Hirst 330 (54) v 163 Paul Roberts
Darren Kell 282 (84) v 167 Jonathan Marwood
Craig Fitzpatrick 249 v 239 Chris Jarvis

Semi-Finals-

Kyle Cunningham 90 v 376 (79,58,53) Mark Hirst
Craig Fitzpatrick 210 (86) v 239 Darren Kell

So the final was between Darren Kell and the last winner of this event Bradford’s Mark Hirst. Common consensus amongst those watching was that it was too close to call and after Hirst took an early lead the match was fairly even at the halfway stage. With no big breaks it was Kell who gradually pulled clear in the second half of the match and at the “buzzer” he held a 317-239 lead and the title was his.

Many thanks to Steve Harrison for his help with the officiating and general organisation and of course to our sponsors the Northern Snooker Centre.

League Leaders Brighouse could only manage a draw away at Ossett. Mick Stocks took both frames for Ossett before Craig Butler did likewise for the visitors.
