Inter District Round Up

Inter District Round-Up

All 8 Division 2 teams were in action at the weekend, in what turned out to be a very competitive set of matches.

The Sheffield “3” v Halifax match finished 3-3 with all individual matches tied. Lionel Payne had a 54 break for the visitors

Bradford gained a 4-2 victory away at Wakefield, Hanif Rafiq proving the difference between the sides.

There was another drawn match at Huddersfield where the no1 side played Harrogate “1”. Robert Read put the home side in front before Kaif Shazad salvaged a draw for Harrogate.

In the final match of the round Harrogate “2” pipped Huddersfield “2” 4-2 thanks to Reece Ezard’s 2-0 victory.

The unfinished match between Bradford and Halifax ended 3-3, Hanif Rafiq had a 51 break for the home side.

So after the first 2 rounds there are 3 teams tied at the top on 8 points, in what looks like being a tightly contested 2nd Division!

The next round of matches is on the weekend of 26th/27th October.

There are just 2 results to report on from this weekends Division 1 fixtures, unfortunately the other 2 matches were postponed.

Sheffield “2” had a 4-2 victory over the new look Leeds “2” side, Shaun Wilkes proving the difference between the teams winning both frames.

In a match played earlier, Castleford defeated Wharfedale, also by a 4-2 score line. Pete Raby gaining both points for the home side, Gyles Behbood chipping in with a 63 break for the visitors.

In an effort to keep the number of re-scheduled matches to a minimum, the committee have agreed to amend league rules 5 and 10 which determine when penalties are applied to teams requesting the postponement of matches at short notice.

Once the new wording is finalised the revised rules will be posted on the website and will come into immediate effect.

It was a similar story over at Huddersfield, Robert Read and Martin Wood scoring 2 points apiece to give the No1 side a 5-1 win.

There was another 5-1 score line at Wakefield, but this time it was the away side coming away with the spoils. Dave Manuel and Reece Matin doing the damage for Sheffield “3”.

The last match between Bradford and Halifax had to be curtailed early due to the venue unexpectedly having to close early. The score stands at 2-2, the remaining 2 frames are to be played asap.

Alex Crum Masters

Alex Crum Masters

At last night’s AGM, it was decided to re-name the over 40’s competition the “Alex Crum Masters” Sadly Alex passed away last year and the competition has been re-named in honour of the near 40 years Alex spent as both Referee and Tournament Director for the YBSA.

The only other change of note is that any prizes of £50 or more will now be paid at the end-of-season presentation night rather than on the day they are won.

RIP Alex

Peter Lines is 2024 Yorkshire Snooker Champion

Peter Lines is the 2024 Yorkshire Snooker Champion

Peter Lines defeated Northern Snooker Centre clubmate Dan Womersley 4-1 in last night’s Yorkshire Snooker final.

The first frame was a scrappy affair, a missed pink off the spot proving costly for Womersley as contributions of 31 and 25 gave the frame to Lines 70-28. Lines then moved up a gear and a brilliant 108 clearance (108-5) was followed by a run of 82 (87-1)to give him a 3-0 lead at the interval.

After the break, Womersley came out determined to show what he could do and a break of 73 gave him the fourth frame (0-79).

The next was much closer and approaching the colours it was anybody’s frame. A nicely laid snooker on the Green put Womersley in trouble and after the third attempt, the Green was hit but left over the pocket. Lines stepped up and cleared Green to Pink to take the frame 62-34 and the match 4-1.

Congratulations to Peter Lines on his fourth Yorkshire Snooker title. He holds the unique distinction of winning the title each time he has entered, having been ineligible to enter for most of his career whilst in the Pro ranks.

Many thanks to Julian Bell for refereeing, Arnold Greenwood for marking and of course to our sponsors the Northern Snooker Centre.
