Alex Crum Masters

At last night’s AGM, it was decided to re-name the over 40’s competition the “Alex Crum Masters” Sadly Alex passed away last year and the competition has been re-named in honour of the near 40 years Alex spent as both Referee and Tournament Director for the YBSA.

The only other change of note is that any prizes of £50 or more will now be paid at the end-of-season presentation night rather than on the day they are won.

RIP Alex

Peter Lines is 2024 Yorkshire Snooker Champion

Peter Lines is the 2024 Yorkshire Snooker Champion

Peter Lines defeated Northern Snooker Centre clubmate Dan Womersley 4-1 in last night’s Yorkshire Snooker final.

The first frame was a scrappy affair, a missed pink off the spot proving costly for Womersley as contributions of 31 and 25 gave the frame to Lines 70-28. Lines then moved up a gear and a brilliant 108 clearance (108-5) was followed by a run of 82 (87-1)to give him a 3-0 lead at the interval.

After the break, Womersley came out determined to show what he could do and a break of 73 gave him the fourth frame (0-79).

The next was much closer and approaching the colours it was anybody’s frame. A nicely laid snooker on the Green put Womersley in trouble and after the third attempt, the Green was hit but left over the pocket. Lines stepped up and cleared Green to Pink to take the frame 62-34 and the match 4-1.

Congratulations to Peter Lines on his fourth Yorkshire Snooker title. He holds the unique distinction of winning the title each time he has entered, having been ineligible to enter for most of his career whilst in the Pro ranks.

Many thanks to Julian Bell for refereeing, Arnold Greenwood for marking and of course to our sponsors the Northern Snooker Centre.

With Leeds needing a draw to retain top spot, it went down to the final frame of the season.

Wharfedale’s Stefan Risidi playing his first match of the campaign defeated Daniel Boyes 2-0 to put Wharfedale equal on points with Leeds but they finished top having had the most wins throughout the season.

Harrogate are Team Ko Champions 2024

Harrogate are Team Ko Champions 2024

There were 12 teams entered in yesterday’s inaugural one-day team knockout competition played at the Northern Snooker Centre.

The teams were split into 3 groups with the group winners and the best performing second placed team progressing to the semi-finals.

In group “A” it was the team representing the hosts, the NSC, who came out on top. An impressive 5-1 victory against Sheffield “2” was followed by a 4-2 win over Wakefield, but they still needed to win their final frame against Belle Isle to salvage a 3-3 draw and cement the top spot.

Sheffield’s James Dabell recorded the day’s highest break (81) in his team’s 5-1 victory over Wakefield.

Results-

Sheffield “2” 1-5 NSC
Belle Isle WMC 6-0 Wakefield

Sheffield “2” 4-2 Belle Isle WMC
NSC 4-2 Wakefield

Sheffield “2” 5-1 Wakefield
NSC 3-3 Belle Isle

In group B it was the team representing the Leeds Association (LBSO), who progressed to the semi-finals with 2 wins and a draw. Chapel Allerton Social Club from Leeds and Allied Carlton from Sheffield finished tied for second place, with Chapel Allerton actually remaining unbeaten after fighting out 3 draws.

Results-

Allied Carlton 3-3 Chapel Allerton
LBSO 4-2 Brighouse

Allied Carlton 2-4 LBSO
Chapel Allerton 3-3 Brighouse

Allied Carlton 4-2 Brighouse

Group C winners were Hanging Heaton Cricket Club who progressed with 2 wins and a draw. Harrogate emerged as the best-performing second-placed team with 2 draws and a win, just edging out Sheffield “2” on frames won.

Results-

Hanging Heaton 4-2 Rowland Road WMC
Harehills WMC 3-3 Harrogate

Hanging Heaton 6-0 Harehills WMC

Harrogate 1 2 0 11 7 4
Rowland Road WMC 1 0 2 9 9 2

So the semi-final lineup was

LBSO v Hanging Heaton
Harrogate v NSC

The first semi-final went to LBSO who defeated Hanging Heaton 4-2, Mally Bilclough proving the difference between the teams winning both his frames.

The second semi-final was won by Harrogate with a 5-1 victory over the NSC, Kaif Shazad and Shabir Ditta gaining maximum points for Harrogate.

So it was all set up for what looked like a close final between LBSO and Harrogate but what emerged was a one-sided contest as Harrogate raced into a 3-0 lead and when Shabir Ditta won his second frame against James Pears it was all over.

Congratulations to Harrogate and thanks as always to our hosts and sponsors the Northern Snooker Centre.

Inter District Round Up

It’s a clean sweep for Sheffield “2” in Division 1.

Congratulations to Sheffield “2” who sealed the Division 1 title after a flurry of matches on the final weekend.

Not only are they champions but David Dalton ended as “MVP” with an impressive 19 wins from 22 frames, and Will Lemons (101) took the high break prize.
At the other end of the table, Rotherham are relegated and Sheffield “1” will need to wait to see how many teams enter next season before learning which division they will be in.

Division 2 reaches a climax in a couple of weeks with the title being decided at Menstone, where unbeaten Leeds “2” just need a draw to clinch the title against second-placed Wharfedale. Kaif Shazad leads the MVP race but is only one win ahead of a chasing pack of 4 players. Tom Harris holds the current high break with a run of 103.

Cooper and Firth take Pairs title

Cooper and Firth take Pairs title.

The experienced Bradford duo of Wayne Cooper and Kevin Firth battled their way to the Yorkshire Snooker Pairs title yesterday after a full day of action at the Northern Snooker Centre.

The revised format of shorter matches in the early rounds with a plate competition for 1st match losers seemed to work well with the semi-final stage reached by mid-afternoon.

In the top half of the draw, Cooper/Firth had wins against Large/Dabell, Bagley/French and Jensen/Jackson before coming up against Michael Whaley/Josh Walker in the semi-final. The Bradford pair raced into a 2-0 lead before Whaley/Walker hit back to level. A tense final frame went down to the colours before Cooper stepped up to calmly clear green to pink to seal the victory.

In the lesser populated bottom half of the draw, Mark Ball and Ant Green saw off Leeds duo Malcolm Bilclough and Tony Massey before beating Harrogate’s Kaif Shazad and Liam Mills in the semi-final.

In a final played in great spirit, a 33 break by Cooper was enough to take the first frame before Ball/Green levelled. The next two frames were tight affairs but it was Cooper/Firth who took them both for a 3-1 win and with it the Pairs Trophy.

The day’s high break was a run of 62 by Michael Whaley.

In the consolation plate final Sheffield’s Shaun Wilkes and Dave Pagett defeated Harrogate pairing Ian Brotherton and Shab Ditta.

Thanks to Andy Kitson for officiating and to our sponsors the Northern Snooker Centre.
