Leed’s Daniel Boyes is Yorkshire Under 16 Champion.
A field of 14 young hopefuls lined up for this year’s Yorkshire U16 competition ranging in ages from 10 to 15.
A regular in Junior competitions for several years now, 15 years old Daniel Boyes started as pre-Tournament favourite, and the favourite tag looked justified as he rattled in breaks of 70,45 (twice), and 90 in cruising through his first two matches 2-0. His semi-final match however, was a much closer affair as he came up against 12 years old Shawn Liu, originally from Hong Kong, now resident in Leeds. Liu won the first frame and despite Boyes having a 39 break in the second, it needed a terrific pot on the Pink followed by a thin cut Black for Boyes to level the match 1-1. The third frame was tight, with Boyes showing great maturity to keep his nerve, eventually potting a long range Pink to emerge victorious. Shawn Liu proving he is certainly one to watch for the future.
In the lower half of the draw it was another competition regular and product of the excellent Northern Snooker Centre Junior Academy, 15 years old Dilraj Ryatt, who battled his way to the final.
The final itself turned into a tense affair with the first two frames split. In the decider Boyes seized his opportunity and compiled a measured 48 break to secure the win and his first Yorkshire title.
Congratulations to Daniel on his win and to Dilraj for a valiant effort in the final.
Many thanks to Andy Kitson for officiating and to our sponsors the Northern Snooker Centre for use of the excellent facilities.
