Defending Champion eases through to Quarter Finals

Four time defending champion Johnathan Bagley from Leeds made light work of qualifying from event 1 at The Northern Snooker Centre for the quarter finals of the Yorkshire Snooker Championships, getting through his 3 matches all with a 3-0 score line.

He opened against Yorkshire U16 champion Stan Moody, after which a walk over due to a no show, saw him take on Casey Ratcliff in the third round before qualifying with a victory against Chris Hart. Bagley has won the last 3 finals and looking for a unique fourth in a row, 5 time champion Craig Butler from Brighouse being the only player in recent times to win 3 consecutive titles, 1997, 98 and 99.

There’ll be no repeat of the last two year’s finals though, with Sheffield’s 2012 Champion David Portman going out at the qualifying stage to Keighley’s Dave Nelson who performed superbly well throughout the day, defeating youngster Riley Fisher, Jason Evans and Howard Mawson all by 3 frames to 2, before taking out Portman with a 3-1 success. Portman had been comfortable in his earlier matches not dropping a frame. Nelson also made the highest break of the day with a break of 75.

The other two qualifiers were Lewis Walsh (Bradford) who beat Joe Markie (3-1), Marc Harman (3-1) and Tommy Doherty (3-1) and Michael Whaley (Huddersfield) who had a 3-0 win over Stephen Broadhead, 3-0 over Gary Duckworth and edged out Josh Walker 3-2.

Young Liam Pullen won 3-0 during his first round match which included breaks of 41 twice and a 54, whilst other noticeable breaks recorded were 72 by Tommy Doherty, 66 by Chris Hart and also 66 by Josh Walker

The second qualifying event takes place on the 15th March which includes former main tour pros Sanderson Lam and Simon Bedford, with 4 again to qualify for the quarter finals, these taking place on the 19th April along with the Semi Finals. The Final, which is also staged at The Northern Snooker Centre in Leeds will be on Friday 5th June.
