Yorkshire Snooker Championship 2023 Qualifier 2 – Results
A strong field of 35 players lined up in the 2nd qualifying day for this years Yorkshire Snooker Championship, all hopeful of securing one of the 4 quarter final spots on offer.
The bottom section of the draw turned into a triumph of youth over experience as youngsters Samuel Lee-Stevens (18) and Daniel Boyes (15) battled their way through to the last qualifying round. Stevens defeated Pete Leathwood 3(56)-0 and Richard Binns 3-1, whilst Boyes beat Martin McArdle 3-0 and Mark Ball 3-1. Eventually it was Boyes who played solid match play snooker throughout to defeat his clubmate 3(50)-0 and gain the the first quarter final spot.
Next player through was Craig Butler who defeated Shaun Wilkes 3-0, David Athorn 3 (80,52)-0 and Ant Green 3(55,70)-0 to claim the second available qualifying spot. Green earlier beating Geoff Lord 3-1 (56) and Mick Jensen 3(50)-2.
Third player through was Daniel Womersley who registered 9 breaks over 50 on the day to claim his quarter final spot. The only frame he lost was against Lewis Gillen who had the days highest break of 108. Amazingly the break came immediately after Chris Hart had taken time out to put him a new tip on his cue after his original tip came off after his first match! Womersley defeated Keith Hartley 3(51,54,61,70)-0, Lewis Gillen 3(51,62)-1(108) and Nigel Cordingley 3(68,51,61)-0. Cordingley having seen off Philip Blackburn 3-1 and Stephen Broadhead 3-0.
The final qualifying spot went to Simon Bedford. Wins over Ben Albone 3(53)-0, Mal Bilclough 3(96)-2(77) and Chris Hart 3-0 saw him through to the last 8 where he defeated multiple title winner Jon Bagley3-0. Bagley having previously had wins over Chris Edley 3-1 and Michael Preston 3-0.
So Daniel Boyes, Craig Butler, Dan Womersley and Simon Bedford join Michael Whaley, Liam Pullen, David Birley and current holder Gary Milne in the hat for the quarter final draw which will be completed at the next YBSA meeting on April 3rd and posted on the website shortly after. The quarter-finals and semi-finals will take place at the NSC on Sunday April 30th.
